A water heater failure is a general household problem, and it tends to happen without warning. A pinhole or a rusted fitting can release a lot of water into a small closet, where it runs under the door into carpet and baseboards. The key steps are shutoff, extraction and thorough drying.
Shut it off first
Turn off the cold water supply valve above the heater, then switch off power or gas to the unit if it can be reached safely. This stops new water, and it protects the crew from electrical hazards while they work. Leave the unit alone if the closet floor is still flooded.
Where the water travels
Water leaves a closet through the door gap and under walls, so hallway carpet, laminate and neighboring baseboards are checked. Meters outline the wet area, and wet insulation or drywall in the closet itself is cut out where it will not dry in place.
