Water heater leaks are a general household problem, not a local one. A tank holds dozens of gallons, and when a seam or valve fails the water runs along the floor to the nearest door, then spreads into carpet and baseboards. Rooms beside the heater get the same water extraction treatment as the closet.
Shut off before cleanup
The cold water supply and the power or gas to the heater are turned off first. A plumber then repairs the fitting or replaces the tank. Drying cannot start until the water stops, and the restoration crew will not run equipment next to a live leak.
Where the water travels
Closet floors are often built with a threshold that lets water escape into the hall. Water also wicks into the bottom of drywall and the framing, so readings are taken in the rooms on every side of the heater.
