A ceiling leak is about what is above it. In two-story homes it is usually a toilet, tub or shower pan upstairs. In single-story homes it is often an attic air handler or a water pipe running through the attic. That indoor source is what separates it from a roof leak, though both end with a wet ceiling.
Reading the ceiling
A small stain that stays firm can usually dry in place with air aimed at it from below and above. A ceiling that sags, bubbles or feels soft is holding water and can fall. The crew drains it through a small hole into a container, then removes the damaged section and dries the joists and insulation.
Finding the source
The tech traces the water back with a thermal camera and a meter to the fixture, pipe or drain above. A plumber or HVAC tech repairs the source; drying starts once water stops coming in. Daily readings on the joists show when it is safe to close the ceiling.
