Flood losses combine deep water, silt and contamination. The crew removes the water in stages, strips porous materials and dries what is left, because anything touched by flood water starts to degrade quickly. Smaller rain events are covered on the storm water page, while deeper losses are handled here.
The valley's history with water
Piru sits in the Santa Clara River Valley beside Piru Creek. On March 12, 1928 the St. Francis Dam broke and a torrent ran down the valley through town. That is history, not a forecast, but it explains why flood readiness matters in a river valley.
What flood cleanup involves
Pumps lower the water gradually, because removing it too fast can stress walls and floors. Mud is shoveled and flushed out, saturated drywall, insulation, carpet and pad are hauled away and framing is washed and sanitized before drying equipment goes in. Floodwater that reaches electrical outlets, appliances or ductwork creates extra concerns, so those items are tagged for inspection by a qualified electrician before they are used again.
